The Devil's Mouth: A Mesmerizing Grotto in Portugal Where a Cunning Occultist Masterfully Fake His Own Death (19 photos + 3 videos)
Boca do Inferno, which means "Devil's Mouth" in Portuguese, is a picturesque rock formation west of Cascais. 
It lives up to its frightening name. Violent Atlantic waves crash against the rocks, forcefully enter the cave system, and then violently burst out of the opening in the roof, like the breath of a mad giant.

This place has captivated travelers for centuries. One of the world's first documentaries, "Sea Cave Near Lisbon" (1896), was filmed right here, inside the grotto, to capture the majestic power of the rolling waves. 
Aleister Crowley
However, Boca do Inferno gained its true fame thanks to Aleister Crowley, the renowned astrologer, magician, and occultist. In 1930, he staged his suicide here. 
Fernando Antonio Nogueira Pessoa – Portuguese poet, novelist, playwright, translator, essayist, and music critic
With the help of poet Fernando Pessoa, Crowley created a plausible account of his death. Pessoa distributed Crowley's suicide note to newspapers, kindly explaining the meaning of the symbols to journalists and police and correcting errors in the Portuguese text. 
Three weeks later, Crowley made a grand appearance at the opening of his exhibition at a Berlin gallery, convincingly proving that the whole affair had been nothing more than a clever PR stunt designed to annoy his lover and partner in magical mischief. 
Today, a small memorial plaque has been installed on the cliff near Boca do Inferno. She recounts this hoax and cites the text of Crowley's very note: "I cannot live without you. I cannot live without you," which translates as "I cannot live without you. The other mouth of hell that receives me will not be as hot as yours." These words might have touched the heart if there had been even a shred of sincerity behind them.
