A smart toilet camera (4 photos + 1 video)

A plumbing and kitchen equipment manufacturer has released a toilet camera. This unusual gadget monitors users' health by analyzing their feces.

Kohler, a company known for its plumbing fixtures, has released the $600 Dekoda camera. It attaches to your toilet and photographs whatever's inside.

Yes, we live in a future where smart speakers listen to conversations, watches monitor your heart rate, and now this.

Decoda analyzes the contents of your toilet bowl, checks for blood, and assesses bowel health and hydration levels. The device attaches to the rim, like those air fresheners.

It works simply: before use, place your finger on the fingerprint scanner, the camera takes photos and sends them to the app. It displays a daily analysis and trends over several weeks. The battery charges via USB, and data is protected by end-to-end encryption. The company swears the camera points directly down into the bowl, and nowhere else.

But the funniest part is the subscription. Buying the device isn't enough; you also have to pay between $70 and $156 per year.

Pre-orders are now open, shipping begins October 21st. One caveat: it doesn't work with dark-colored toilets. Kohler specifically warns about this. Apparently, the camera can't see anything on black ceramic.
