A tourist got lost in the jungle and ended up in another country (3 photos)
Nineteen-year-old Lawrence Stallard Honoré went missing on September 27. He was last seen leaving a hotel in Myanmar. He wandered through the jungle for over a week and eventually reached Thailand.
When Lawrence went missing, his mother, Gulnara, filed a report at the Pattaya police station.
She told police: "I checked my son's emails and found records of his trips to Kanchanaburi Province. This really worried me. He's shy and quiet, but he knows his way around computers. I'm afraid he got involved with people online and was lured into one of the scam centers in Myanmar, which is difficult to escape from."
It turned out the guy was lost. He spent ten days in the jungle before stumbling upon a Buddhist temple on October 11th.
During this time, Lawrence subsisted on ants and bark, walking more than 240 km along the Mekong River.
Police Colonel Santi Phitaksakul said: "During questioning, it was revealed that Mr. Lawrence was planning to travel to Payathonza in Karen State, Myanmar. He planned to cross the border through the Three Pagodas crossing on September 27, but the crossing was already closed."
Lawrence's parents feared he could have become a victim of human trafficking or abuse. Myanmar plunged into chaos following the February 2021 military coup that ousted elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The country has been engulfed in civil war and armed conflict. The reasons why the 19-year-old British man decided to cross the border into Myanmar and disappeared remain unclear.
