Norbert's millennia-long glacial trick (20 photos + 1 video)

In the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, on the slopes of Ingleborough Hill, silent witnesses of the Ice Age stand frozen in place—the mysterious Norbury Erratics.





These ancient giants of dark sandstone and shale stand frozen in impossible balance on dazzling white limestone plinths, like titans playing with stone blocks.



Their story didn't begin here. A powerful glacier, retreating 12-17 thousand years ago, tore them from their natural habitats during the Silurian period. And, like a careless giant, it tossed them onto the limestone plain. Then time got to work. Millennia of rain and wind washed away and eroded the soft limestone. But where it was protected by the hard cap of a boulder, the stone pedestal stood firm. Thus were born these amazing sculptures, created in collaboration between ice and erosion.





Today, over a hundred of these boulders are scattered across the slopes, forming one of the most impressive geological monuments in the world. A walk among them is a journey into the depths of time and eras, where you can touch the legacy of the great glaciation and admire the works of nature, capable of creating such a fragile and simultaneously powerful miracle.
