Slugs and snails are a gardener's nightmare. Traditional pest control measures aren't working, and you want to avoid harmful chemicals? There's a simple solution!

Chemical granules are a popular pest control method. However, their use is undesirable because they are dangerous to pets and wild animals. Birds and hedgehogs, which naturally control slug populations, can be harmed by these products.

Horticulturalist Colin Campbell-Preston recommends using plants to repel slugs and snails. They particularly dislike milkweed.

"Slugs and snails seem like tiny eaters, destroying everything in their path. However, there are plants they avoid."

Colin emphasized that these are plants with particularly dense foliage, which are difficult for them to chew through, and which make a very fragrant addition to the garden.

He recommends planting milkweed: "The milky sap of milkweed has a bitter taste that slugs and snails simply cannot digest."

Milkweed blooms when temperatures drop. At this time, less hardy plants either die or go dormant.

Another plant that will "quickly upset the stomachs of slugs and snails" is geranium.

With over 300 species of geranium, you can easily find one to complement your garden. Geranium is hardy and makes an excellent groundcover plant that effectively controls weeds.
