The secret Project 816 is a truly impressive military base in China.

Project 816 is an underground complex located near Chongqing, created in response to growing fears of a possible nuclear threat from the Soviet Union.

Construction of the complex began in 1966 and continued until 1984, with over 60,000 engineering troops taking part in the work.

With a surface area of over 104,000 square meters and a tunnel length of over 20 kilometers, the base looks like a huge artificial cave with many tunnels and roads that allow free movement by car.

The structure is comparable in height to a 20-story building and consists of 18 interconnected caves.

However, due to changes in the international political situation, the project was not fully implemented and was frozen in 1984.

In 2010, the base was declassified and opened to tourists, allowing locals to learn more about its history and significance.

Since its declassification, Base 816 has attracted the attention of both locals and tourists, allowing them to learn about the significance and scale of the underground facility.

Visitors can explore shelters designed to protect against potential military threats, as well as see surviving infrastructure that is reminiscent of the past.

The base served not only for military purposes, but could also be used for scientific research and technological experiments.

A unique engineering solution made it possible to build such a large-scale structure, which became a symbol of its time.

Today, Project 816 is considered not only as part of China's military history, but also as an interesting object for studying architectural tunnels and engineering.

It provides a unique opportunity to assess how global political changes can affect the rapid development of infrastructure projects.

Since 2016, the underground base has been open to foreign tourists, attracting the attention of many to this unique site.

Visitors can now explore the underground rooms, learn about its history and military architecture, as well as the lives of military personnel in the past, promoting cultural exchange and interest in China's military history.
