The Vibe Singapore Orchard charged a Chinese tourist $200 after she ate a durian in her room. The pungent-smelling fruit violated the hotel's policy of charging for special cleaning.





A Chinese woman visiting Singapore unexpectedly spent $200 on cleaning her room after she ate a durian in it — a fruit with a smell so pungent it is banned in many public places in the country.

Vibe Singapore Orchard has confirmed that it charged a guest for professional cleaning after a strong durian odor was detected in her room. The woman, who stayed at the hotel from May 25 to 26, ate the fruit in her room without realizing it was against the hotel's rules.

"We have a standard for all guests. If there is a lingering odor in the room, a $200 fee will be charged for professional cleaning and odor neutralization," said hotel manager Sherlyn Wong. She said the guest agreed to the request and paid the amount without arguing.



The victim, known as Blue Mulberry on the social network Xiaohongshu, shared her story in a viral post. She explained that the durian cost only $13, but the fine made the trip much more expensive.

According to her, she bought the fruit while walking with a friend, couldn’t find where to eat it on the spot, and decided to bring it to her room. The durian was already peeled and packed in a foam container. However, even in this form, it gave off a strong odor.

The next day, the woman found a letter from the staff in her room notifying her of the fine. The surprise was a shock for her.

After the publication, in which the Chinese woman told in detail about what happened, it turned out that she is not alone, and many tourists complain about similar stories, not suspecting that durians are prohibited in hotels.

"Luckily, we did not go back by train, otherwise the fine could have been even higher," she added and advised other tourists to be careful with fruits with a characteristic smell.
