Murmansk and submarines (140 photos)

In Soviet times, there was a large naval base on the Kola Peninsula (ZATO Ostrovnoy). The base housed a large number of nuclear submarines.

I managed to visit one of the boats (my father served), but I cannot post these photos for certain reasons.

After the collapse of the USSR, in accordance with the disarmament treaty, all nuclear submarines (nuclear submarines) were given a death sentence. Most of them were sent for scrap to the nearest large port of Murmansk.

This city can only be reached by water or air - there are no railways or roads. Tundra all around.

Over the past 10 years, more and more people have been leaving Gremikha. If in the 1980s. the population was about 30 thousand people, then in 2006 (when I left there) there were about 10 thousand people. Now the city is dying out. Only those who make money in the administration or who simply have a good job stay there. Or the state did not provide housing for someone.

The main type of travel to the nearest city of Murmansk is the motor ship Klavdiya Elanskaya.
