Scam of the century: a woman changed the locks in 80 apartments and sold them to her loved ones (2 photos)
A shocking scam has been uncovered in China in which a woman named Wang Wei illegally changed the locks and sold 80 apartments over a period of 5 years by falsifying the title deeds. The total damage from her actions amounted to about 24 million yuan (approximately 3.3 million US dollars).
The woman, named Wang, is in her early 30s. After getting married in 2017, the couple began to accumulate credit card debt due to the Chinese woman’s lavish lifestyle. To help, the husband's father even mortgaged his house for a 450,000 yuan loan.
Unbeknownst to Wang's husband, Cheng, his wife had been leading a double life since 2019. After learning about a local housing program, she used Photoshop to forge documents, convincing locksmiths to change the locks on apartments that she claimed belonged to her. To avoid suspicion, Wang hired different locksmiths and kept them away from CCTV cameras.
After getting hold of the keys, she sold the apartments at a reduced price, claiming they were "inside." The scam targeted 42 people, mostly relatives and friends, including her husband's aunt and sister.
Wang spent the money she earned mainly on streamer Zhang Zhen from Harbin, with whom she began a relationship. Since they met in 2022, she has transferred more than 9.8 million yuan to him, gifting him cars, including an SUV worth 1.4 million, and buying real estate. She has also generously sponsored other streamers.
Meanwhile, the unsuspecting husband continued to pay off the family debts. At the time of publication, the investigation is ongoing. Streamer Zhang and the platform on which he broadcasted are cooperating with the police. About 8 million yuan have been recovered.
Lawyers believe that due to the scale of the crime, Wang could face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
