Europe's most wanted drug lord, who once faked his own death, has been killed (4 photos)
Marco Ebben was wanted internationally for drug smuggling from Brazil to the Netherlands. Last October, the 32-year-old faked his own death in the Mexican cartel heartland of Culiacan. However, on February 13, his body was found in Atizapán de Zaragoza, a municipality 24 kilometers from the capital Mexico City.
He was allegedly shot while walking to his armored car. Two hitmen fired at least 15 bullets at Ebben and threw him between two cars in a parking lot. Several fake IDs were found among his belongings.
The European Union's law enforcement agency Europol included the drug lord in its list of the continent's "most wanted criminals." In October 2020, he was sentenced to more than seven years in prison. Between 2014 and 2015, Ebben and his accomplices smuggled 400 kilograms of cocaine in containers filled with pineapples. His father, a notorious criminal from Schiedam, was sentenced to 11 years for bribing a customs officer in the same trial.
After fleeing to the United Arab Emirates, Italy and Turkey, Ebben reportedly joined the Mexican drug gang Los Mayos, part of the Cártel de Sinaloa.
