All the Colors of Cuba in the 1990s in the Photographs of Tria Giovan





New York-based photographer Tria Giovan traveled to Cuba more than a dozen times in the early 1990s and took over 25,000 photographs, creating a multi-layered and intimate portrait of the Island of Freedom. Tria Giovan is an avid traveler who grew up in the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. As a young photographer in New York, she decided to go to Cuba to document in depth and depth the country’s economic depression. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, she lost financial and diplomatic support, entering a protracted “special period” marked by poor energy and food supplies.

But Jovan didn’t go because of politics. She went to Cuba as an objective observer, intrigued by the relatively isolated country. It began with a one-time trip organized by the Center for Cuban Studies, but then 11 trips followed, lasting months and repeated over six years. During that time, Jovan took some 25,000 photographs, 100 of which were included in the book Cuba: The Elusive Island, published in 1996 by Harry N. Abrams.
