The cub's mother passed away shortly after his birth. Although these animals generally cope well with loneliness, social connections are especially important for them at an early age.

To help the cub socialize, the zoo contacted a local shelter. The center agreed to give the zoo a dog named Slinky. She and Amora quickly found common ground.

“They have been introduced to each other ever since, and although Amora has a saucy personality, Slinky’s playful nature is helping her grow into the wolf she’s destined to be,” the zoo said.

Amora and Slinky will stay together until the cub is an adult. When that happens, she will be sent to live with other maned wolves. There’s no need to worry about Slinky’s fate either: one of the zoo’s staff members plans to take her in once she and Amora are ready to part ways.

Other zoos also often house dogs with wild animals. For example, in Virginia, a cheetah has been sharing an enclosure with a Labrador for almost ten years.
