Neve Campbell: what films influenced the actress's career (15 photos)
In the 90s, there were many actors and actresses who gained wide popularity, but were unable to stay on the Hollywood pedestal for long. Almost the same thing happened with the star of the "Scream" films, Neve Campbell, about whom nothing is heard at all now.
Short biography
As always, to begin with, I would like to dig a little into the personal biography of the actress, telling about her life before she got into the movies.
Neve Campbell was born on October 3, 1973 in Guelph, Canada, to a psychologist (mother) and a high school drama teacher (father). Although Neve was born in Canada, she has no Canadian roots, as her mother is Dutch with Jewish roots, and her father is Scottish.
But the family idyll did not last long, because when Neve was only two years old, her parents divorced. Neve and her brother Christian stayed with their father, only occasionally visiting their mother.
At the age of 9, Neve entered the National Canadian Ballet School, where she achieved quite good success, thanks to which she even received roles in the ballets "The Nutcracker" and "Sleeping Beauty".
However, the future actress was never able to build a career as a ballerina due to the injuries she received. Therefore, she had to quit ballet and try to find herself in something else. As a result, her choice fell on a career as an actress.
She began to actively try herself in this business, and some time later she got a role in the theatrical production of "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Toronto Theater.
Beginning of a film career
In 1991, Neve Campbell made her first screen debut, playing an episodic role in the series "My Other Self". However, no one paid attention to her in this Canadian series. She played a much more noticeable role in the series "Pill of Joy", which was released in the same 1991. However, here too, few people noticed the actress.
But in the Canadian youth series "Podium" (1992), Neve played a really noticeable role. Yes, few people know about this series, but thanks to it, she was able to show herself somehow.
After that, Neve appeared in several more films and series, and also voiced one of the characters in the animated series "The Simpsons". Thanks to this, her filmography was noticeably expanded and the actress began to be noticed even more. But it was still difficult to talk about any success until 1994.
Success
In 1994, Neve Campbell got into the American TV series "Party of Five", which would eventually open the way for many aspiring artists, such as Jennifer Love Hewitt and Matthew Fox.
Party of Five
Thanks to the success of the series, Neve got into the film "The Craft" (1996). And even though the film failed at the box office, grossing $24 million on a $15 million budget, no one blamed her for the failure.
But the most important thing is that director Wes Craven was a fan of the series "Party of Five". And he liked Campbell's performance so much that when he became the director of the film "Scream" (1996), the first thing he did was invite Neve to play the lead role. Moreover, for her participation in the film, she asked for a fee of $1.5 million. And this request was approved, which is generally strange, since Neve was not a star, but acted mainly in television projects. Even actress Courtney Cox, who was already known for the cult series "Friends", received a much smaller fee.
Scream
But be that as it may, the film "Scream" was a stunning success. With a budget of 14 million dollars, the film collected as much as 173 million at the box office. Moreover, the success of the film "Scream" influenced the "Slasher" genre itself, which was in decline at that time.
Naturally, such a success could not be "put on the back burner", and Neve Campbell was immediately signed for the second part of the film "Scream", which was released in 1997. Moreover, for the second part of the film she received a fee of 3.5 million dollars. The only problem was that it was difficult for her to combine filming in the second "Scream" and the series "We are five", as it was very exhausting for her.
The film "Scream 2" was also very successful. With a budget of 24 million dollars, the film collected 172 million at the worldwide box office. There were no doubts about filming the third part, but still the filmmakers decided to take a short break.
Failures
While the actress was waiting for the filming of the film "Scream 3", she managed to star in several films, which, however, did not show very well at the box office. For example, the rather well-known film "Wildness" collected only 30 million dollars at the box office with a budget of 20 million, which was definitely a failure. Nevertheless, she received a very good fee for this film in the amount of 2 million dollars.
Dicost
The actress herself said that she was drunk during the filming of explicit scenes. She deliberately got drunk in order to be more relaxed on camera and not be shy.
The dramatic film "Studio 54" (1998) also performed very poorly at the box office, collecting only 16 million dollars with a budget of 13 million.
Studio 54
And such films as "Three to Tango", "There's Something About Danny" and "Panic" also did very poorly at the box office. Neve clearly had some kind of black streak. Failures followed one after another, which could not but affect her career.
Of course, she could have improved her situation if she had agreed to play the role of the daughter of Bruce Willis' character in the film "Armageddon", but she refused, and in the end the role went to actress Liv Tyler. But fortunately, Neve still had an "ace up her sleeve".
Another success
This "trump card" was, of course, the film "Scream 3" (2000). Neve had high hopes for this film, and for filming in this film she received a record fee for herself in the amount of 4 million dollars.
Scream 3
The budget of the film "Scream 3" has already grown to 40 million dollars. And despite the fact that it performed worse at the box office than the first two parts, it still collected decent money, namely 160 million evergreen American dollars, which allowed Campbell to "stay afloat" for some time.
New failures
Then, Campbell had a choice - to star in the film "Troup" by Robert Altman or the musical "Chicago" by Rob Marshall. In the end, the actress chose the film "Troup". It is unknown what was the main reason for this choice, but for the film "Troup" she received more than she would have received for "Chicago".
But Campbell "bet on the wrong horse", because the film "Troup" failed miserably at the box office, despite the director's fame, while the film "Chicago" collected 306 million dollars with a budget of 45 million. Moreover, "Chicago" grabbed several Oscars, including in the category "Best Picture".
Troup
Then, Campbell's career began to decline again, and she began to be offered roles in big films less and less often. Most often, Neve could be seen in little-known films that bypassed theatrical distribution and were released directly on video. Or she appeared in TV series, which, however, were closed quite quickly due to low ratings.
Although, of course, sometimes Neve ran into rating series, such as "Medium" (2005) and "Grey's Anatomy" (2005), but this did not really help her falling career.
Scream 4
When the filming of the movie "Scream 4" (2011) was announced, Neve Campbell was even inspired, as she believed that the continuation of the cult franchise would be a "lifeline" for her. But here she was wrong. Of course, the film could not be called a failure, but with a budget of 40 million dollars, the film collected 97 million. As you can see, although there was a "blow-off", it became clear that interest in this franchise was clearly falling, and very rapidly.
After that, Campbell practically stopped appearing in films, only occasionally running into some little-known series, which is why she disappeared from the radar. And hardly anyone knows about projects like "Vow of Silence" and "Welcome to Sweden".
Vow of Silence
And perhaps one could say that Neve Campbell went to the bottom, and her further career can simply be forgotten, if not for a couple of "BUTs".
Firstly, in 2018, the film "Skyscraper" was released with Dwayne Johnson in the lead role. Here, viewers unexpectedly for themselves again saw the practically forgotten actress in the role of the main character's wife. But here, of course, Campbell's merit is definitely not due. All the glory was taken exclusively by Johnson, who was a very popular actor and attracted a huge number of viewers to cinemas.
But the most interesting thing is that in 2022, the fifth part of the long-forgotten franchise "Scream" was released, where 49-year-old Neve again returned to the role of Sidney Prescott. Surprisingly, after the dubious success of the fourth part, the fifth part did quite well at the box office, collecting $140 million with a budget of $40 million.
Scream 5
She could have consolidated her success by starring in the sixth part of the film, which was released in 2023, but in the end she refused to participate because she was offered too little fee.
But here's the problem, the success of the film "Scream 5" did not help the actress return to big cinema. She was not offered roles. And, apparently realizing that she had no other options except for "Scream", Neve signed up to star in the film "Scream 7", which is scheduled to be released in 2026.
Perhaps the seventh part of the cult slasher will also be successful in the cinema, but it is unlikely to save the actress's career. And if you think about it, all of Neve's success was only due to the films from the "Scream" series. And now she will probably star in this franchise until old age, and she is already 51 years old, just for a second.
