This salt marsh in the south of France is a surprisingly delicate pink color, just like the magnificent proud birds that live here.





Pink salt marshes are not such a rare phenomenon. But those in whose waters you can enjoy meeting pink flamingos are something incredible. And the city of Aigues-Mortes in France is exactly such a place.



Salt marshes are found in many countries. They form along the coast where constant tides have taken away some of the land, and the ecosystem has evolved to cope with the changed conditions.





A striking example of this is the San Francisco Bay. But most salt marshes do not have the flamingos that flock to the Aigues-Mortes region.



The region of southern France, whose name translates as "dead water" due to the salt production here, has long been famous for its high-quality salt. Since the Roman Empire, salt has been mined here, which is supplied throughout France and to other countries.



Production takes place in several stages, which explains the many different pools and canals that surround the plant. But even with all this thriving infrastructure, the bright pink waters have lost little of their pristine splendor.
