Footage has emerged of a speedboat carrying British tourists in Thailand suddenly smashing into trees, leaving passengers screaming and panicking.

Ellie Neary, from Derbyshire, was enjoying a boat trip around the islands of Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta on January 3 when the captain lost control.

The boat shot out of the water and hurtled across land, leaving a trail of broken trees in the mangrove forest.

Ellie Georgia said: "When we were heading from Koh Lipe to Koh Lanta, our boat crashed into the land at high speed. The driver lost control, the boat collided with trees. Luckily, no one was seriously injured."

Another incident occurred in Thailand the same week: a tree fell on the roof of a bus in Kanchanaburi, injuring 11 people.

An illegally cut tree fell on the windshield of the vehicle. Emergency services arrived at the scene. Of the 36 passengers, 11 were taken to hospital.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Maniphat Pengklet said a traffic accident was reported at 10 a.m. on Friday.

"A blue Benz passenger bus was found at the scene of the accident on Highway 3199. It was heading to Erawan Waterfall when a felled tree fell on it. The windshield was broken. There were at least 30 foreign nationals on board. "Ten people were injured by broken glass and branches," the officer said.

Most of the passengers suffered minor injuries. Canadian tourist Jamie Michelle Mitchell, 45, was taken to intensive care with a neck injury.

Roads Department spokesman Thawatchai Viriyajit said he would pay the patients' hospital bills.

Thailand has a poor record in terms of tourism safety. Boaters often go out to sea in bad weather and capsize their boats. In addition, many public transport vehicles are very old.

In November 2018, a ferry sank off the coast of Phuket, killing dozens of Chinese tourists.

In August 2020, a ferry sank off the coast of Koh Samui, killing at least three people.

And last month, a South Korean citizen drowned when a boat capsized off the island of Koh Phangan in Surat Thani Province.
