If you suffer from heart palpitations and nausea after a couple of glasses of wine, it may be all in your genes. As a new study by geneticist Yannis Mavrommatis has shown, people with anti-alcohol DNA are literally programmed to feel bad after drinking.

The specialist explains that the symptoms usually appear soon after drinking alcohol. It all starts with a flushed face, fever and headache, and in more severe cases this condition can develop into vomiting, tachycardia and difficulty breathing.

The reason lies in a certain mutant gene that cannot produce an enzyme that breaks down alcohol. The fact is that in the body, ethyl alcohol is converted into acetaldehyde, which is initially toxic to humans. However, in the course of evolution, we have learned to digest it with the help of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), which breaks down and removes alcohol from the body.

However, some people have a gene variation that leads to the creation of a defective form of the enzyme. As a result, acetaldehyde accumulates in the body, causing a feverish state due to intoxication. The geneticist advises those with this defective enzyme to drink only small amounts and wash down alcohol with plenty of water. Mixing drinks with non-alcoholic mixtures such as juice or tonic water can also reduce symptoms in people with hypersensitivity.
