The most unusual Rolls-Royce will be put up for sale (9 photos)
One of the most famous cars built for the Paris-Dakar rally marathon, the Rolls-Royce Corniche prototype, also known by the nickname Jules, will be put up for sale at the Aguttes auction. The car, built for the 1981 race and having almost nothing in common with the original Rolls-Royce, is expected to fetch between 400,000 and 800,000 euros.
The rally Corniche was built by the Frenchmen Thierry de Moncorge and Jean-Christophe Pelletier. They took the chassis of the Toyota Land Cruiser BJ45 as a basis, adding a space frame, a 5.7-liter V8 from General Motors in the engine compartment, and formed the body panels from fiberglass. This car has a few external details in common with the original Rolls-Royce - glazing, bumpers and radiator grille.
The car received the nickname Jules in honor of one of the fragrances of the Christian Dior fashion house, which became the sponsor of the project. The prototype did not win any titles at the Dakar, as it dropped out of the race due to an accident, but was still able to reach the finish line under its own power after repairs. The Jules advertising campaign after this marathon was called one of the most successful in history, as the rally Rolls-Royce provided the fashion house with numerous mentions in the media.
The Corniche is being auctioned off fully restored (it cost 150 thousand euros). The auction house notes that the car's status will allow it to participate in various historical events, including the Dakar Classic.
