Rescuers and military are fighting the aftermath of the flood and evacuating the victims.
Last night Spain was hit by heavy rainfall - 445.4 liters per square meter fell. This has not happened there since 1966.
In the province of Almeria, hail fell on top of it:
The cause of the disaster was Cyclone Dana, which was stuck between the anticyclone over Great Britain and the thermal dome over Africa. And the blocked element unleashed all its power on Spain - there was even a series of tornadoes, which is actually typical for Tornado Alley in the US, but something new in Europe.
Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Valencia were hit the hardest. The latter declared a red alert and sent rescuers and soldiers there.
More than 60 roads are closed, hundreds of people are trapped there by the flood. Many buildings are thoroughly flooded.
Train traffic is blocked, and people are being evacuated by helicopter.
There are missing and dead:
At the moment, according to preliminary data, the death toll is 51 people. We are starting to identify the victims, - reported the Unified Operational Coordination Center.
Emergency services are working at double capacity, and hospitals at triple capacity. Flood victims are still being transported there.
Forecasters warn that the storms in the country will not subside until Thursday.
