Audi has revived a unique 30s supercar with 520 horsepower.
A unique Auto Union Type 52 Schnellsportwagen made its debut at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood, England. This is a little-known supercar from the 1930s, which was never released at the time. Focus writes about it.
Auto Union Type 52 Schnellsportwagen is a high-speed sports car project created in 1935 by Ferdinand Porsche on the basis of racing cars of the ". It existed only in drawings and sketches, because they did not manage to produce even a prototype.
The Audi company, which is the successor of Auto Union, decided to build a supercar of the 30s. The car turned out to be very unusual.
The mid-engine coupe is built on a frame and has a light and streamlined aluminum body. The car reaches more than 5 m in length with a wheelbase of 3.3 m, and its weight is 1448 kg.
In the cabin, the driver sits in the center, and two passengers sit on the sides (as in the McLaren F1). Expensive wood was used in the decoration. It is interesting that there was a place for the trunk (it has a separate door) and two spare wheels.
But the most interesting thing is the engine located behind the seats. It's a huge supercharged 6.0-liter V16 from the 1936 Auto Union Type C (also built by Ferdinand Porsche).
The 88-year-old motor develops 520 hp. and 886 Nm and runs on an "explosive" mixture of 50% methanol, 40% gasoline and 10% toluene. The Auto Union Type 52 Schnellsportwagen supercar received hydraulic shock absorbers and drum brakes.
