A woman took up magnetic fishing and pulled an antique pistol out of a river (4 photos + 1 video)
Nikki Gough, a UK resident, decided to try a new hobby – magnet fishing. It was fun and she cleaned the riverbed. On her first trip to the River Medway in Kent with her son, she managed to find a 130-year-old gun!
The 43-year-old Maidstone resident recently took up the hobby with her children, and her first foray to the river was truly unforgettable. Standing on the bank, she threw a magnet into the water and pulled out a rusty mass that looked like a gun. There was no way to make a mistake.
At first, Nikki had no idea what kind of weapon she had found, but experienced "magnetists" advised her to soak the find in carbonated water to remove rust. After several days of soaking, it became obvious that this was not some kind of toy or dummy, but a real (and also antique) gun that had been lying in the river for many years.
"It's a pin trigger gun, about 130 years old," Nikki said. "I've heard of similar finds from others and seen on YouTube how people pull things out of the water."
After finding out what the object was, Nikki contacted the police and handed it over to them.
"They took it away for further examination," she added.
This lucky woman isn't the only one who recently came across a firearm while fishing. In August, a group of London teenagers found an arsenal of firearms at the bottom of a river.
15-year-old James White was fishing with friends in Catford and decided to go for a swim. He slipped on something in the water - it turned out to be a pistol magazine. At first, James thought he was imagining it, but after looking closer, he realized he was not mistaken. He and his friends began to deliberately search the bottom. The "catch" consisted of 11 weapons, including a revolver and an Uzi submachine gun, as well as magazines with ammunition.
