A Virginia man left a gun in his oven, and the mistake nearly cost him his life. The man turned on the appliance, and the gun fired several shots.
"Please do not store guns or anything else in your oven," Chesterfield County Fire and EMS warned.
Firefighters responded to the scene Thursday evening after the homeowner reported that his oven had exploded, the department said.
When they arrived, crews opened the oven and found a gun melted on the grate.
"It appears someone turned on the oven with a gun inside, the weapon heated up and fired five rounds," the department said.
Luckily, no one was hurt, but "it could have been a very different situation."
Firefighters reminded: "When you leave an item in the oven, it's easy to forget about it. This can lead to a fire or other unpleasant consequences if you turn the appliance on. You should also take care to properly store your firearm. Keep it in a safe place, such as a safe."
Bullets must heat up to about 200 degrees before they can spontaneously discharge.
According to statistics, up to 43% of U.S. households keep loaded guns. Half of them do not keep them in safes, which creates a potential danger.
