In 1930, Hollywood adopted the Hays Code, an ethical set of rules and guidelines that all film makers in the United States were required to follow. The list was divided into two parts: “Be Carefuls” and “Don’ts” - that is, what was not recommended, and outright prohibitions. Today these rules have not been observed for a long time. Let's take a look at what was stated in the Hays Code.

Any use of national flags is undesirable

Scenes of arson, theft and burglary are undesirable

Demonstration of unkind attitude towards public persons or organizations is undesirable

Scenes in which a man and woman lie in the same bed are undesirable

Scenes of excessive or lascivious kissing are not recommended, especially when one of the characters is "bad"

Scenes discrediting the institution of marriage are undesirable

Demonstration of white slavery was prohibited

Mention of sexually transmitted diseases was prohibited.

Depictions of mixed marriages were prohibited

Priests could not be negative or comical characters

Display of any nudity was prohibited - even in the form of a shadow or silhouette
