A resident of Montana decided to engage in illegal cattle breeding and got into trouble big time. In 2013, Arthur Schubart acquired in Kyrgyzstan the DNA of the ram (argali) Mark Polo, the largest representative of its species, which lives only in Central Asia. The goal of the enterprising livestock breeder was to develop large breeds of sheep for sale to hunting reserves.
An 80-year-old cattle breeder managed to implant embryos into a sheep and clone a purebred argali, which he dubbed the “Mountain King of Montana.” Business took off. Sheep crossed with a cloned Central Asian ram began to generate significant income. So, for example, he sold one of the sheep for 10 thousand dollars to livestock farmers from Texas.

The enterprising Arthur Schubart planned to obtain a hybrid of argali and bighorn sheep and managed to obtain the genetic material of the latter, obtained on his order by a hunter in the mountains of Montana (Arthur paid $400 for the testicles of the unfortunate ram). But his plan was not allowed to come true. The fact is that international conventions prohibit the import of argali into Montana due to problems with diseases and hybridization.
The “Mountain King of Montana” was taken into custody by the US Wildlife Service, and all argali offspring were placed in quarantine. Schubart's trial is scheduled for July 11. The man faces a maximum penalty of a fine of $250,000 and prison for up to 5 years.
