Police found Formula 1 driver's Ferrari stolen in 1995 (4 photos)
The red Ferrari F512M Testarossa stolen from Gerhard Berger after the San Marino Grand Prix almost 30 years ago has been found. In January, the Italian automaker told British police that checks on a Ferrari in the process of being sold to an American buyer through a British broker showed the car to be stolen.
Employees of the anti-theft department soon found out that this sports car belongs to the Austrian racing driver Berger. The car, capable of accelerating to 315 km/h, was in Japan all this time until it was transported to the UK at the end of last year.
Police seized the car, worth $444,000, before it could be sold and transferred to an American buyer.
In 1995, a Ferrari F512M was stolen from a hotel parking lot in Imola. The thieves were not afraid of the owner standing not far from the sports car.
Gerhard Berger, who eventually finished third at the San Marino Grand Prix, chased the criminals in his friend's Volkswagen Golf, but to no avail.
Around the same time, Berger's teammate Jean Alesi had his silver Ferrari 355 stolen. This car was never found.
