Not just for sushi: wasabi helps preserve ancient papyri (4 photos)

A natural remedy has been found to clean and preserve ancient Egyptian papyrus, which is susceptible to bacteria and fungi. The new technique uses wasabi, the same spicy green paste that is served with sushi.

A study conducted by Hanadi Saada and her team examined the effectiveness of wasabi vapor in eliminating the growth of microorganisms that spoil precious historical documents.

Previously, chemicals were used that effectively destroyed microbes, but sometimes damaged the papyrus fiber or changed the color of the illustrations.

Physical methods such as ultraviolet rays or heat have not always ensured complete elimination of biological agents.

Employees at the Grand Egyptian Museum have found a green solution that can protect ancient texts without compromising their integrity.

During the experiment, it was found that treatment with wasabi vapor for 72 hours destroyed the growth of microorganisms in both dyed and undyed papyrus samples with 100% efficiency.

Remarkably, the treatment increased the strength of the papyri by 26% without causing noticeable changes in the color or surface morphology of the artifacts.

In addition to providing a safe and environmentally friendly way to preserve papyri, this technology ensures the longevity of priceless relics without compromising their integrity.

This discovery may have implications for conservation methods for various organic materials. The archaeological community is closely monitoring the research, hoping that the environmentally friendly solution will usher in a new era in preserving the world's cultural heritage.
