Not the smartest decision by the captain on the ship CCGS Amundsen
CCGS Amundsen is a Pierre Radisson-class icebreaker and Arctic research vessel operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. It is named after Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer who led the first expedition to reach the South Pole.
The vessel was built in 1978 and put into service in 1979. Its length is 98 meters and its gross tonnage is 5,911 tons. The Amundsen is powered by two diesel engines that together produce 11,155 kW (15,000 hp). It can break ice up to 1 meter thick and has a range of 12,000 nautical miles (22,000 km).
Amundsen is mainly used for scientific research in the Arctic Ocean. It is equipped with many laboratories and scientific instruments that can be used to study the ocean, ice and atmosphere. The vessel also supports other Coast Guard missions such as search and rescue and navigational aids.
