The mudflow was caused by heavy rains that hit the region for several days. As a result of the rains, the rivers overflowed their banks and the water rushed into the lowlands. Dozens of cities and villages were hit by the elements. A rapid channel flow, consisting of a mixture of water and rock fragments, suddenly appears in the basins of small mountain rivers. The main feature of such flows is the high saturation of debris, which ranges from 10 to 75% of the volume of the moving mass.
The disaster killed at least 337 people, injured more than 1,000 and left nearly 100,000 people homeless.
