Huge waves crashed across the territory of the island of Roy-Naymur so that all military personnel had to be evacuated from the base, with the exception of personnel who would have to clean up the destruction and restore the infrastructure.
Last Saturday, the American military learned what this very rampant nature was like. Huge waves of the Pacific Ocean hit the US base located on the island. Roy Naimur, the second largest island of Kwajalein Atoll.
In a video circulating online, you can see a large wave breaking down the doors to an army canteen. Streams of water knock people off their feet, and after a while another wave hits the building.
According to Mike Brantley, a spokesman for the US Army garrison on Kwajalein Atoll, one person was injured as a result of the emergency and is now in the clinic. Immediately after the incident, all “non-essential personnel” were evacuated to the island of Kwajalein, to the headquarters of the missile test site, located at the other end of the atoll. And 60 people were left at the damaged military base to “assess the damage and restore what was destroyed.”
The first priority is to assess the safety of the runway at Roi Namur. It needs to be cleaned and prepared for moving people and goods. An operation to restore the military base, even with multiple mission partners, could take months, Brantley's spokeswoman said.
The Kwajalein Atoll military base is known to serve as an integrated space and missile defense test site for the Department of Defense. Important space tracking equipment is located here. There are about 1,300 Americans living in the Marshall Islands who work for the US government, the Department of Defense.
