In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and to be precise - in the Hazaribagh district, where most of the residents work in leather industries. But this has nothing to do with the fact that the entire area is buried in garbage, which they do not hesitate to throw here from other regions.





In total, about 200 thousand people live in Hazaribagh, and since 95% of the tanneries of the entire country are located here, every person has a profession predetermined here almost from childhood.

And at the same time, this profession makes him a hostage to the dirtiest area. It turns out that the boy can’t do anything else and has no education. But he can’t even go anywhere outside the region, because he can’t find use for his skills anywhere else - all the factories are here.

A curious format of modern slavery, slightly different from brick factories in that the “prison” is not a workers’ camp remote in the desert, but a unique production facility that simply does not exist anywhere else.



There has been no life in the river for a long time

They receive from 2 dollars a day, including children. As usual, children start working here at the age of seven, for several hours a day. First they help their parents, because there is nowhere to leave them, and then they learn the skill.

None of the workers wear gloves or other hand protection, even though tanneries often work with dangerous chemicals for tanning leather. If you give everyone gloves, production will become unprofitable.

The remaining skin scraps are burned, which is why there is a constant burning smell in the air, which is saturated with chemical toxins. So not only the skin, but also the eyes and lungs of people are constantly under the influence of chemicals.

More than half of the locals suffer from body aches, headaches, constant nausea, rashes and poorly healing acid burns.

But a salary of $2 or more does not allow you to receive quality treatment. Since the summer temperature here hovers around 40 degrees Celsius, the smell of rot and garbage never leaves the area. Children born here don’t even know that the air can smell differently.

Men work hard jobs, while women and children often make do by catching plastic bottles from the river to compress them and sell them by weight. It has long been impossible to catch anything except bottles in the rivers; the fish became extinct many years ago.
