Hippopotamus mouth and teeth check
Hippopotamus teeth grow throughout their lives. They have four large incisors at the front which they use to tear up grass and other plants. Behind the incisors are four canines that can reach a length of 18 inches. Fangs are used for defense and fighting.
The teeth of a hippopotamus are white and shiny. They are covered with a layer of enamel, which makes them very hard. Hippos regularly brush their teeth and rub their muzzles against rocks and trees. This helps them remove plaque and bacteria.
Dental health is important for hippos. If the teeth are damaged, the hippo may have difficulty chewing food and may be vulnerable to infection.
Dental checkups are important to identify any problems with your hippo's dental health. The hippo's teeth are checked by veterinarians or animal care specialists. During a dental examination, a veterinarian or animal care professional will evaluate the condition of the hippo's teeth and provide treatment if necessary.
Dental checks are usually performed every two years. However, if the hippo has dental health problems, checks may be performed more frequently.
