The Sedlec Crypt has a long history, which began in the 13th century, when the abbot of the Sedlec Monastery brought with him a handful of the Holy Land. He scattered this “sacred soil” throughout the Sedlec Cemetery, making it one of the most desirable burial places for believers throughout the Czech Republic. But there wasn't enough space. In 1870, a local carver named František Rint was hired and given the grim task of decorating the church with excavated human remains.
