Why you shouldn’t swim away from a shark (3 photos + 1 video)
A professional diver explained why running away from sharks is not the best solution.
When faced with a shark in the open ocean, most people are terrified and try to swim away to avoid the attack of the terrible predator. However, the professional diver showed by her example why this should never be done.
Dive organizer Kaylee Nicole Grant filmed a video in which an adult tiger shark weighing about half a ton became interested in her fins. The animal chased the diver as she swam away, but stopped doing so when the girl stopped and gently pushed the predator away, looking at it. “If you panic and swim away from sharks, they will likely continue to chase you due to their predatory instincts,” notes Grant.
The divers' advice is confirmed by marine biologists from Shark Lab. “Always look at her. If you look at the shark, it will be able to understand that you are watching it, and in most cases it will swim away,” experts advise. Additionally, the shark may decide to swim up behind you for another closer look. This does not mean that it is chasing you - rather, it is a way for the shark to get a better look at what could harm it.
