The Philippines is located on the "Ring of Fire" - a belt of volcanoes that circles the Pacific Ocean and is prone to earthquakes, so natural disasters are not uncommon here. They can be mild or destructive, as in 1990, when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in the northern Philippines killed more than 1,600 people. Earthquakes that cause tsunamis are considered dangerous - this happened in 1976. Then, according to various sources, from 5,000 to 8,000 people died.
