Newfoundland dogs are amazing in size. However, you shouldn’t be afraid of them; for the most part, they are sweet and good-natured creatures.

Now is the time to adopt a Newfoundland puppy! Why? Well, look, the month of November is coming, and if you take your baby now, then by summer and open water swimming season you will have a ready-made rescue diver and fishing assistant! With this you can safely go to the river and have a barbecue: the animal will pull you out of the water in any condition, and will help you bring nets with fish to the shore. As they say: if I had such a dog, I might never get married!

Newfoundlands are a breed of giant long-haired dogs native to Canada. Just imagine: the largest representatives grow up to 76 centimeters at the withers, and at the same time weigh up to 120 kilograms! Add to this the long and very thick double coat - why not a bear? The real one! Only very kind, gentle, smart and devoted, with him you won’t be lost even at the ends of the world.

Because that's where they come from. Barbosov were bred on the island of Newfoundland, which is located in the northeast of North America. The ancestors of the canine Aquamen were quite the land-dwelling Pyrenean Shepherds, which were brought to the island by fishermen from France in the 1500s, and black retrievers, which arrived a little later with English colonists. Newfies took the best from their parents: shepherd size, intelligence and devotion, retriever hard work, courage and independence.

Both people and the earth itself contributed to this evolution. Newfoundland is a harsh piece of land, surrounded on all sides by water and blown by all the winds. There is often rain and fog there, and until recently the locals were very dependent on what the ocean gives them - in terms of agriculture, there is not much to be done on the island. The bipeds survived there as best they could: today they weren’t washed out to sea, which means it was a great day!

Dogs also developed at approximately the same rhythm. Giant fur watchdogs became excellent helpers: they carried nets with fish in the sea, towed cargo on land and rescued unfortunates who fell into the depths of the sea. The dogs learned to do the latter literally at the level of instincts! Even today, Newfies do not need special training to comprehend the simple logic “a person is drowning - you need to swim and save.”

There are many known cases when untrained puppies rushed into the waves towards drowning people and in a couple of minutes brought them to shore.

This breed of dog will never touch a person, even if it is a strange, small and very annoying child. They are kind to people and always remain affectionate bear cubs at heart. The only danger lies in their size: a dog weighing 120 kilos doesn’t have to bite someone, you can just sit on the offender. And who would even think of offending such a kid?...

It is thanks to all these qualities that today many Newfies work as water rescuers. Be sure: even if people don’t notice you, the dog will definitely find you! And they are truly happy, because there is no better fate for this breed than to be needed and important.

Of course, some enthusiasts keep watchdogs just as a pet. But here you need to immediately understand: if you have a one-room apartment somewhere in the center, then it is not the dog that will live with you, but you with her. Newfies are strong, active and agile dogs. A private house and a spacious yard, long walks with the owner and training are perfect for them. Animals can be a little stubborn, but such a bear always tries to do only the best for humans.

This dog has so much fur that you can knit a winter set of a sweater, pants and socks!

Caring for such a dog is not an easy task, especially in an apartment. One of my friends kept a huge pet Newf in her apartment and spent on him every month an amount equal to half his cost. It was crazy love and a lot of money. Therefore, if you don't have both, think twice before getting a rescue puppy.
