22 famous brides who abandoned the traditional white dress (23 photos)

13 October 2023

The long white wedding dress has long been synonymous with the wedding ceremony, as the color is associated with purity and virtue. But sometimes you really want to challenge traditions and rewrite the rules of wedding fashion! Here's how some famous brides did it.

1. Emma Thompson

Who said a wedding dress has to be plain? In 1989, Emma Thompson chose a knee-length floral print dress and matching shoes for her special day. In addition, the famous British actress chose a funky headpiece that perfectly reflects the fashion of the 80s.

2. Lily Allen

If you're getting married in Las Vegas, you can do it in style with a Dior dress. British singer-songwriter Lily Allen did just that. An Elvis lookalike performed at a modest ceremony in Sin City, and after the vows were pronounced, the newlyweds went to feast at a fast food restaurant. In general, it was unusual and fun, and the singer believes that the wedding was a great success.

3. Gwen Stefani

The wedding of Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, lead singer of the band Bush, took place in 2002 in a 17th-century Catholic church in London. The ceremony location was traditional, but the dress was not: the singer walked down the aisle in a pink ombre dress custom-made by John Galliano for Dior.

4. Amal Alamuddin

This Hollywood couple never disappoints when it comes to fashion. Their wedding was no exception. On her wedding day, the bride wore a white two-piece Stella McCartney pantsuit with navy trim. There was a sun hat on his head. As the newlyweds sailed down the Grand Canal in Venice, Amal wore an elegant white dress with floral embroidery.

5. Christine Quinn

Actress Christine Quinn chose an unusual theme for her wedding celebration: winter wonderland and gothic. She shocked everyone present with a black dress from Galia Lahav and a 7-meter veil.

The festive table decoration also differed from the traditional one. The tables were lined with custom made chocolate gargoyles. Each glass of water contained black roses with ice cubes inside. The hall was also decorated with ice sofas and ice sculptures. Everything was very theatrical.

6. Elizabeth Taylor

The famous actress married actor Richard Burton in 1964.

For the wedding, she wore a marigold yellow babydoll dress designed by Irene Sharaff, the costume designer for the film Cleopatra. The bride's image was complemented by hyacinths and lilies of the valley woven into a spectacular hairstyle. Taylor also wore a Bulgari diamond and emerald brooch.

Richard Burton was the actress's fifth husband. Their first marriage lasted 10 years (1964-1974), their second marriage lasted a year (1975-1976).

7. Sarah Jessica Parker

The Sex and the City star's choice of wedding dress had a lot to do with her desire to maintain privacy. The actress bought a black dress from Morgane Le Fay because she didn't want anyone to find out about her wedding. “I was embarrassed to get married in white, and Matthew and I didn’t want people to pay so much attention to us,” the actress said in a 2006 interview with Marie Claire magazine.

8. Anya Taylor-Joy

The Queen's Walk star married musician Malcolm MacRae in a custom Dior dress. Her choice of dress color, dusty rose, caught everyone's attention on social media. Among the details of the delicate dress were hummingbirds, thistles and the symbol of Anya's zodiac sign - Aries.

9. Alison Pill

The Canadian actress made a bold choice in favor of yellow. Her short-sleeve dress was adorned with a red flower clip. Couple undershared photos of the ceremony in Los Angeles on social networks.

10. Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore's dress was specially created for the red carpet at the Oscars. However, the actress liked it so much that she kept it for her wedding day. The pink Prada dress was accessorized with green stud earrings.

Julianne Moore and director Bart Freundlich married in 2003. The ceremony took place in their home on the West Side of Manhattan in a small wedding hall in the presence of 36 guests.

11. Melissa Gilbert

The actress explained that she had already gotten married in a white dress, "but for the third wedding it seemed ironic to her." Like Goldilocks, she tried on many different dresses until she found the one. “I tried pink and powder blue, but they seemed somehow “immature” to me. Black was too dark for such a happy occasion.”

The actress found “that very dress” in the store of designer Morgana Le Fay. “It was the first dress that caught my eye: a gorgeous layered strapless chiffon dress in the most beautiful deep red color we had ever seen.”

12. Yoko Ono

The legendary couple tied the knot in Gibraltar in 1969. Yoko's look was simple and at the same time elegant. On this day, the Japanese artist wore a white summer minidress and complemented it with a hat, large sunglasses, knee socks and white sneakers.

13. Emily Ratajkowski

Emily decided to choose a look from Zara for her special day. The model styled an orange pantsuit by adding a black hat with a veil. In 2018, she surprised everyone by getting married in a New York courthouse.

14. Ricky Lake

Rikki Lake described her wedding as "perfect." She explained that after days of heavy rain, the weather suddenly cleared up on the Sunday of the ceremony, and the feeling was “biblical.”

The spirituality of the ceremony was probably helped by the fact that the former talk show host swapped her heels for soft slippers to slow dance with her husband. The bride chose a golden-orange dress, while the groom wore a black shirt and khaki pants.

15. Kristen Bell

The actress got married in an outfit that is usually worn for gatherings in the office with colleagues or for a birthday dinner. Of course, Bell's outfit reflected her casual style.

The actress spoke about the wedding venue - the courthouse in Beverly Hills: “We wanted us to be close to each other. We didn't want to look or talk to anyone else but each other. Our friends joked a lot about the fact that we didn't invite anyone, and then they gave us a cake with the words 'Worst wedding in the world' written on it."

16. Stephanie March

The actress was introduced to Dan Benton by a mutual friend in 2015. “They met for cocktails at the Orient Express bar in the West Village and then had dinner,” said one friend. “But their first real date was a TED Talk, after which they talked for four hours.”

At the wedding in New York, the bride wore a printed Dolce & Gabbana dress. To make the ceremony even more unconventional, she walked down the aisle to a Star Wars theme song.

17. Kat Von D (Katherine von Drachenberg)

The American tattoo artist and gallery owner arranged a wedding in the Gothic style in 2018. Floor-to-ceiling red jewelry, horns on the head, a long red train, and a castle-shaped cake (you guessed it, red) all indicate that the bride and groom didn't want their wedding to be discreet. The bride wore a red long-sleeved ruffled dress by Adolfo Sanchez, adorned with a red veil and red horns.

18. Shenae Grimes

“I now pronounce us Mr. and Mrs. Beach! Ahhh!” - signaturela actress Shenae Grimes is photographed kissing her husband, British musician Josh Beach, in London. For the wedding, Grimes wore a V-neck dress from Vera Wang's Fall 2012 collection.

19. Chloë Sevigny

For her 2020 NYC City Hall wedding, Khloe chose a long-sleeve black dress and white veil. The actress met her Croatian husband, an art gallery director, in 2018. Four years later, the couple had a wedding again, but this time the bride wore a traditional white dress.

20. Teyana Taylor

Instead of driving off in a convertible with a romantic message on the back seat like old times, singer Teyana Taylor and her then-husband donned jeans and leather jackets with "I Do" written on the back.

21. Solange Knowles

Solange showed off her best side in a white Stéphane Rolland jumpsuit with a floor-length cape.

She and her now ex-husband walked down the aisle in 2014 outside the bride's home in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans.

22. Kourtney Kardashian

Instead of a traditional long dress, the eldest Kardashian sister chose a corseted minidress from Dolce & Gabbana for her May 2022 wedding. The reality star completed her look with a long veil embroidered with the Virgin Mary and the words "family, loyalty, respect" - like one of the tattoos of her husband Travis Barker, the drummer of the band Blink-182.
