A tourist from the United States smashed “blasphemous” ancient Roman statues in a Jerusalem museum (4 photos)
A deeply religious American was offended by ancient ancient statues and caused a pogrom at the Israel Museum.
A 40-year-old American was arrested in Israel for committing a real massacre of statues. They were said to be “blasphemous” and “contrary to the Torah.”
The man armed himself with a stick and began to destroy the cultural heritage of ancient Rome, dating back to the 2nd century AD. Security detained the violent American at the museum before the police arrived.
Eli Escusido, head of the Israel Antiquities Authority, stated:
“One statue was a marble effigy of the goddess Athena, found during excavations at Beit Shean in the 1960s. The second depicted the mythological creature Griffin, which was a symbol of divinity during the Roman pagan era and was found in the Negev.
This is a shocking case of destruction of cultural heritage. We are deeply concerned that religious extremists are taking such actions."
The weirdo was placed under arrest, the investigation continues. He is due to appear in the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Thursday. Well, the statues were handed over to specialists to assess the possibility of their restoration.
The Israel Museum is the largest cultural institution in the State of Israel and is ranked among the world's leading museums for art and archaeology.
It houses the world's most extensive collections of biblical archeology and the archeology of the Holy Land.
