In Japan, they brought out a new fruit that combines the best qualities of melon and lemon. They called it lemon melon.





Fruit, round, juicy, sweet like melon, but slightly sour like a lemon. The shape of a lemon melon is similar to a watermelon, but the peel does not have the usual stripes, but inside it is white. Now the fruit is grown five farmers in a limited number in the city of Furano on the island Hokkaido. The horticultural company Suntory Flowers said that the fruit bred from a melon variety imported from abroad. The selection process took long five years.



Lemon melon has only recently entered the market, and now costs approximately 3,220 yen ($25) each. Those who have already try the product, love it. "Very refreshing, I like it" says one of the buyers. “Good balance of sweet and sour. This the perfect fruit for a hot day,” said another.

The texture of a lemon melon is initially crunchy, like that of a pear, but as it matures, it becomes much softer, like a classic melons. In 2023, farmers expect to grow about 3,800 lemon melons to be sold in Sapporo supermarkets until the end August, writes SoraNews24.
