Mom to the rescue! The female jackal recaptured the cub from the eagle (8 photos)
Incredible photos show the moment a jackal rescues his cub from an eagle's clutches.
A tawny eagle swooped in and snatched a baby jackal from his terrified mother in photographs taken in the Masai Mara, Kenya.
The mother rushed at the predator, as a result of which he threw cub. He landed back on the ground unharmed, to a large the joy of his mother, who grabbed him and escaped the attack of an eagle.
Photographer Atib Hussain, 39, captured the dramatic moment and said that for the first time he noticed how the mother of the jackal was running with baby in the mouth.
At first he thought she was looking for hyenas in the area, but 10-15 minutes after I first noticed the mother, a tawny eagle suddenly swooped down and tried to snatch cub from mother's paws.
The jackal managed to escape for a while from under control of the eagle, outwitting it, but the predator came for the cub in the second once and grabbed his prey.
Mr Hussain said: "It was so fast and only lasted a couple of seconds.
The eagle grabbed the cub, but the jackal rushed after it, and the cub was dropped mid-flight.
Maybe the eagle didn't get a strong enough grip."
A few minutes later, the eagle again pursued the mother and her cub, but when that was unsuccessful, he finally gave up and flew away."
