The tribes of the Omo Valley decorate themselves with our garbage: the destructive influence of civilization on the "wild" natives (8 photos)
We used to think that environmental problems, pollution environment and overconsumption of resources is some kind of a whim that concerns politicians, fanatics and celebrities who want to PR on the theme of the Earth.
Ordinary people in our country are not accustomed to doing waste sorting and recycling. It's perceived as a completely unnecessary and useless activity (which is sometimes without adequate management).
And our garbage, meanwhile, does not go anywhere, it is actively fills the planet, reaching its most remote corners. That's the tribes of the Omo Valley, wild and unbridled, showed by their example: we influence this planet and the people on it more than we think. Because now they look like this:
And it all started very harmlessly: civilization found "savages" and tried to tame them a little. In essence, these tribes passed the same stages of development of society as others before them. It all started with gifts and networking. First they were given T-shirts and shorts, then gave a taste of "civilized food" and then began slowly but that's right, hook on the "needle" of commodity-money relations.
And now, not even a century has passed, as the once "wild" tribes with happy to pose in front of tourists, not forgetting to ask them for money for a photo session and beautiful beads as a keepsake.
And in general, the indignation could end there, if not a single "but". Some European corporations have decided even stronger intervene in the life of the tribes. They did it outside the box and, for the most part parts, unknowingly. The big bosses just decided to save on waste recycling. And, surprisingly, it turned out to be cheaper it is illegal to fuse to Ethiopia than legally dispose of.
As a result, the tribes of the Omo Valley had access to a huge the amount of trash they found... attractive. Bright, shiny and the loud jingling beer caps seemed to the natives a wonderful decorations.
And here it is worth clarifying a little: in a strange decoration of oneself more than one Desanech tribe was involved, as most write sources, but several at once: from Mursi to Ban. You can even see it in the photo different phenotype of these people.
Yes, and they decorate themselves, contrary to stereotypes, not only beer caps. Any metal "ringers" are used: keys, wire, the remains of cutlery and even hairpins. natives with joyfully cling to themselves everything that they find.
And here a completely logical question arises: why do people cling to frank rubbish on yourself? The answer is simple: what is garbage for some value for others. For them, this is not garbage, but a way self-expression. Real jewelry.
After all, almost all primitive tribes adorn themselves in one way or another: someone enlarges his neck with rings, someone paints his body with clay, and someone is completely addicted scarring. Against the backdrop of all this, beer caps and bolts look pretty innocent.
However, many years ago in their place were shells and sticks. The tradition didn't come out of nowhere, it just changed a bit. Became something new. Indeed, according to the representatives of the tribes themselves, the ringing colored iron is more elegant than simple pebbles and sticks. And this is hard argue.
And there is nothing strange in the fact that these people adorn themselves like that. or wrong: someone removes Bish's lumps and shakes his lips, and someone picks up trash. The idea of beauty is different from people to people, it's natural.
The only sad thing is that our civilization has developed so much that began to influence the most remote corners of the planet. Changing the essence of people and interfering with the natural let of the formation of peoples.
