The mystery of Lake Angikuni, from where an entire settlement disappeared in an instant (7 photos)
To this small Inuit village, hunters and fishermen hunted in the north of Canada, strayed more than once. Local always they were greeted hospitably, fed, provided lodging for the night. But in the next such a sunset, the settlement on the shore of Lake Angikuni turned out to be completely deserted.
Joe Labelle was a fur hunter and often visited these places. The locals knew the man well, they welcomed him with joy, because he was an excellent storyteller and delighted his friends from the local stories from the big world.
Lake Angikuni
On November 12, 1930, he once again decided to look into village to rest and recuperate after a long wander around forests. But he was greeted not by exclamations of greeting, but by ear-cutting silence.
There was no hum of voices, no barking of dogs. Surprised Labelle headed for the nearest yaranga. He called out to the owners and, not hearing response, went inside. A frightening picture appeared before the guest's gaze: recently an extinguished fire, food that did not even have time to cool down. But the owners were nowhere to be found.
A similar picture awaited him in other yarangas. In many had signs that people were planning to start eating. Here and there lay the skins prepared for processing. But signs of people was nowhere.
Where did everyone disappear to?
Typical Inuit settlement
Joe felt a kind of animal terror. After all, the man is excellent knew that people living in harsh conditions were accustomed to constant struggle with nature. And even in the neighboring village, no one will advance without a reserve food, warm clothes and weapons. And it's like everyone is alive here the creatures simply evaporated. After all, in the district there were not even traces that would show the direction in which the inhabitants left.
Despite being very tired, the hunter almost ran rushed to a large neighboring village: there was a communication center. in my head the only thought was: what if there is no one there?
The vise around his heart loosened as he entered the village. and heard the sound of voices. Joe answered the telegram. And after a few hours, mounted policemen arrived at Angikuni, who volunteered to help local hunters.
Questions without answers
Dog team
A careful examination showed that the entire population of the village in 28 people simply disappeared. Found nearby mass grave of dogs. The animals were severely emaciated, apparently died of hunger.
But the Inuit treated dogs very responsibly. Rather, they themselves would starve than let the dogs die, because sled dogs are the first helpers in this area. Without them, nowhere. Tem moreover, there were stocks of food in the yarangas. And massive loss of life excluded from hunger.
Inuit
The second unexpected find was waiting for the group at the local cemetery. All burials were dug up, there were no bodies in the graves. And the grave the stones that the Inuit used to stack in the form of pyramids have been removed and neatly laid out side by side. Which is amazing, since the tribe belonged to the deceased with awe and reverence. And they did not approach the graves without unnecessary need, not to mention opening them up and extracting the remains.
For some time, the story was actively discussed in the Canadian press. What forced people to suddenly leave the village? If they urgently had to migrate to another parking lot, then how to explain the abandoned things, weapons, food? Questions about the dead remained unanswered. dogs and open graves.
Even a completely absurd version of the coming aliens who forced people to do such strange things, and then who took them with them. Of course, there were witnesses (allegedly) who saw bright glow around the lake. Which moved to the settlement for a couple days before his visit by the hunter.
Already in our century, interest in history has become more active again. Lovers of mysticism tried to find the descendants of Labelle in order to get some additional information. But the attempt did not bring results. AND the story of the disappearance of an entire village under such strange circumstances continues to be a mystery.
