Rare statue of Cahuil, Mayan god of lightning found in Mexico (3 photos)
Archaeologists have discovered a rare sculpture of a powerful deities in the southeast of Mexico, along the tracks of the Maya Train (Tren Maya) - tourist railway, the construction of which is planned to be completed by 2024. 
The sculpture of the ancient god Kahuil are part of the urn, found near section 7 of the Maya Train project, the report said. National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) April 27. Section 7 extends from Bacalar in the state of Quintana Roo to Escarcegui in state of Campeche.
Cahuil is associated with lightning, snakes, fertility and maize and often depicted with a zoomorphic head with large eyes, long upturned muzzle and thin snake leg, symbolizing lightning. 
Although images of Cahuila can be found in Maya reliefs, and also in the codices of Dresden and the Maya in Mexico, throughout history have been found only three statues of Cahuila, all of which are in the Guatemalan city of Tikal.
Prieto Hernandez, CEO of INAH, said: “This the discovery is very important, since there are very few images of the god Cahuil; before so far we know of only three in Tikal, Guatemala, and this is one of the first to appear in Mexico.
Experts have seen Kaviil before in paintings and reliefs, but not in the form of sculpture. 
According to the INAH release, specialists looking for artifacts along the route of the future train, by this time a huge number of discoveries. As of April 27 cataloged and reserved over 896,000 pottery, 491 bones and almost 49,000 buildings or foundations.
