An accident involving a fuel truck on the bridge almost led to an environmental disaster

On the largest bridge in the state of Connecticut (USA), the most epic accident occurred due to a burst car tire.

Let's talk in order. Last Friday at around 12 noon on the south side of the huge Gold Star Bridge, which connects the city of Groton with New London, there was an accident involving a passenger car and a truck carrying 8340 liters of fuel.

A car tire burst, the driver lost control and flew into a fuel truck. On impact, it rolled over, and the fuel spread over the bridge and caught fire, forming huge clouds of smoke. The truck driver died before the arrival of the doctors, but the driver and passenger of the car were more fortunate, they survived and were taken to the hospital with various injuries.

Some of the fuel that leaked from the truck spilled into the river, and the burning debris from the truck and the bridge railings started fires below, but no one on the bank was hurt. At the moment, environmentalists have managed to eliminate the consequences of fuel getting into the water.

This was announced by Governor Ned Lamont.

After the fire was extinguished, it turned out that part of the protective fence from the side of the bridge had completely melted. State Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eukalitto said it is not yet clear when the southbound bridge will reopen. About 60,000 vehicles pass through the spans daily, he said. In fact, the Gold Star Bridge consists of two bridges and different traffic - south and north. The last renovation was carried out in 2018.
