30 collages of old and new photos taken from the same point (31 photos)
American Mark Hersh has been fond of photography all his life and history. After many years in marketing, he retired and thought about what to do next. Finally it was possible to completely indulge in your favorite hobbies! Mark found old pictures of Chicago where he is lives, and decided to find these places in the city, take pictures and compare in style "It was - it became." It turned out great.
Here is his story:
I've been taking pictures all my life. My parents bought me my first camera - Kodak Instamatic - when I was 10 years old. I photographed everything: people, places, animals, nature and inanimate objects. It doesn't matter what, I I just loved taking pictures.
It was also the time when I developed an interest in history, which has not faded to this day. When I was growing up in Boston my parents used to drive me to all the historical sites of the Revolutionary War, where I, Naturally, I took a lot of pictures. I was 16 when we moved to Northern Virginia, across the Potomac from Washington, DC, and I spent the entire first summer there, exploring the capital of our country. Later when I studied at Virginia Tech, I visited many Civil War battlefields such as Gettysburg, Manassas, and Antietam. These places have left an indelible mark on me.
1. Train "Mercury" leaves Chicago. 1936/2020
Fast forward 50 years.
When I turned 60, preparing to retire from marketing and advertising, I began to think about what I would do next. I AM photographed all his life and by now photography has become digital. Over the years I have acquired some high quality equipment, including the NIKON D850 professional camera and half a dozen the best lenses. I also studied Photoshop and other programs for photo work.
And then one day in 2016 I came across very old photos Chicago, where I have lived for over 20 years. These pictures are from the end 1800s and early 1900s. I thought it would be interesting to find these places, take identical pictures in a hundred years and compare them with originals. I took a few and looked at them next to the originals. I AM I didn’t even know that there was a name for this: rephotography - pictures of one and the same place from the same point of view at two different times time.
2. Chicago fire. 1871/2021
As interesting as it is to look at these images side by side, I thought it would be even more interesting to combine them digitally, creating a single image that is partly old and partly new. I made a few of them and showed my friends. They were shocked. They invited me to exhibit my work at art fairs and festivals. So I did! But first I needed more content.
By 2017, I had created 10 images. I applied for several art exhibitions in Chicago, and to my complete shock, I was accepted for all! Not only that, I won several awards, got a local fame and invitations to return next year. But what more important, people bought my photos!
