21st century caveman's home

25 July 2017

Each of us at least once dreamed of escaping civilization and modern life, at least for a while. "Caveman" Angelo Mastropietro made this dream come true! He settled in a 250-million-year-old cave in Worcestershire - and now the amenities available are indistinguishable from a city apartment. The man spent about £160,000 and about 1,000 hours of his life on this, but still managed to bring comfort to the wild.

The former head of an Australian recruitment company has decided to leave his former stressful life behind and go underground in Worcestershire.

He spent around £160,000 on it after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007. For some time he was killed and crushed, but then he said to himself: “I want to live in a place where I can have a healthier and happier life.”

The father of two shoveled about 80 tons of stone before he managed to make his dream come true

He claims his diagnosis was a “catalyst for him to remind him that it was time to respect his health and lifestyle.” The Worcestershire native first learned about this cave back in 1999. The cave, which was used as a home for 300 years, was abandoned in the 1940s.

Angelo bought the cave - the oldest rock dwelling preserved in Europe until the 20th century - for 62 thousand pounds. With a budget of £100,000 and working independently, he soon transformed it into a cozy flat. The work on the interior doors alone took him 11 days...

This is where Angelo sleeps. This is probably the quietest bedroom in the world!

The walls in Angelo's house are white.

In this photo, Mr. Mastropietro is sitting in the bathroom, which had to be converted into a shower - Angelo realized that he could not heat enough water to fill it.

Low-arched walls and pebbled decorations give the shower a unique look, while the heated heated towel rail makes it comfortable.

Mr. Mastropietro, who designed and built the kitchen himself, discovered the cave while sheltering from the rain with friends during a bike ride.

The walls and contours of the house still remind us that there was once a cave here, although the housing is decorated with modern materials.

Water comes to Angelo's house from his own well, 80 m deep. Organic materials - wood and stone - are used to make the shells.

Mastropietro did not need planning and construction permits, so his imagination unfolded in all its glory. Angelo's ambitious project was shown on British television, and it truly captured the imagination of viewers.

“I like these kinds of challenges,” says Angelo. “My last name means “master of stones,” so that’s probably my calling. Without a shadow of a doubt, I can say that I did this with the same passion that I had previously put into my company. I'm proud and happy. It was a really creative challenge."

Light constantly enters the house through the huge glass windows. On the huge terrace you can enjoy the views of creeping plants on the walls of the house. The main distinguishing features of the house are a huge terrace, cozy secluded rooms and light walls. And in this photo you can see the top of the fireplace chimney.

The cave was formed in a block of sandstone, in an area that probably inspired Professor Tolkien to dream up the world of Middle-earth.

Angelo Mastropietro invested enormous physical labor into his new home, which, among other things, contributed to the improvement of his health.

Wanting to live in solitude and tranquility, Angelo, however, did not give up electricity, running water, or even the Internet. However, as he says, “for all the convenience of housing, it retains a certain charm of the cave.”
