5 most interesting subways in the world

A modern metropolis is unthinkable without a developed system of high-speed underground transport. In the 20th century, the largest cities not only in Europe and America, but also in Asia acquired their own subways. The metro systems of countries that are traditionally at the forefront of scientific and technological progress fascinate with their scale and technical perfection.

The Tokyo metro ranks third in the world in terms of the length of existing rail tracks, 24 km ahead of the Moscow metro and second only to London and New York. The first subway line in the Japanese capital opened in 1927 – then its length was only 2.2 km. Today there are 13 lines, and the multi-colored layout of the Tokyo metro with its intricacy can scare even the most experienced underground travel lover.

The Tokyo "underground" has a number of features that are not typical of the European metro. Firstly, it never belonged to the state and, not least of all, that is why it developed at an incredibly rapid pace. The principle of reasonable economy formed the basis for design decisions for the Japanese capital's subway. Thus, most metro lines connect to railway lines running on the surface of the earth. Secondly, the metro is built from the surface, and the excavated tunnel is covered with steel sheets on top, along which road transport follows. Statistics say: on weekdays, in just one and a half hours, from 7:30 to 9:00, the Tokyo subway carries 7.5 million passengers. So it’s better to choose a different time for excursions.

And there really is something to see in the Tokyo subway! Thus, transitions from line to line are not bare corridors, but entire shopping galleries, continued by a series of restaurants and snack bars. Particularly noteworthy in this regard is Shibuya Station, where trains stop on the fourth floor of a giant shopping mall. Another undeniable attraction of the Tokyo metro is the new O-edo line, which has a total length of 40.7 km. In plan, it resembles a lasso thrown over the city center, and consists of a ring (which was done for the first time in the Tokyo and in general in the Japanese metro) and a radius running from the Tokyo municipality to the northwest, to the residential area of Nerima. This line connected all 23 districts of Tokyo!

The Tokyo metro is not only beautiful, but also fantastically convenient. For example, the diagrams indicate the numbers of cars from which it is most convenient to exit if you need to transfer to another line. The names of stops are announced in Japanese and English, in addition, each car is equipped with an electronic display, which even a person who does not know a single foreign language can understand.

The metro in Shanghai is one of the youngest in the world. The first line was opened here in 1995. The rapid pace of construction can be judged by the fact that today the length of the metro in Shanghai is already 107.8 km. But the city is not going to stop there. Over the next 5 years, another 8 new metro lines should be built in Shanghai - a total of about 300 km of underground communication lines. Each Shanghai metro station has two levels (at the top there are ticket offices, shops, turnstiles, at the bottom there is a platform) and several exits (at junction stations their number can reach ten or more). Shanghai subway cars are equipped with LCD monitors that broadcast commercials without sound. It’s also very easy to catch a cold in the Shanghai metro. The fact is that in the halls and on the platform the air temperature reaches 35 degrees, and in the carriages, thanks to the efforts of powerful air conditioners, it does not rise above 15.

The Seoul subway is also quite young. Construction of the subway in the capital of South Korea began in 1970, and the first line accepted passengers in August 1974. Now there are already eight operating lines and construction of a ninth is underway. Without the metro, the huge metropolis that is Seoul would probably be simply paralyzed. Every day the capital's subway carries about 4 million passengers. Seoul subway stations are decorated very intricately: there are fountains, aquariums with fancy fish, many posters and photographs of local celebrities. In addition, the Seoul metro is equipped with the latest technology: elevators, displays, television monitors broadcasting video clips and popular television series - all of this is in abundance in the Seoul subway. So passengers traveling from one end of the city to the other for 3 hours have something to do.

The deepest metro in the world was built in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. The average depth of its tunnels is 120 m, and in some places the tracks dive underground as much as 150 m. This metro is very pompous in its design and completely subordinated to ideology. Both the lobbies and the platforms are dominated by majolica, mosaics, and gilding, joyfully reporting on the prosperity of the communist regime. Moreover, in every subway car you can see portraits of political leaders. But on the contrary, you won’t find advertising in the Pyongyang metro during the day - in a country of developed communism, this “engine of trade” somehow does not take root. But the authors of this subway have the most original lighting system for escalators: the lamps are mounted not in the ceiling or walls, but directly in their “body”.

But Hong Kong boasts the world's first fully automated metro. Here the trains are controlled not by drivers, but by special computers. This metro is extremely technocratic: chrome surfaces, smooth walls, mirrors, plasma screens, electronic signs are everywhere. It is interesting that not only designers, but also psychologists work on the atmosphere that reigns in the Hong Kong subway. Thus, this year special terminals – “happiness meters” – were installed at 19 central stations. With their help, any passenger can rate their mood underground - from 1 point to 10. At the end of each day, computers process the information received and issue an “average happiness index for the metro,” which is displayed on information boards in the cars, and is also posted on the official metro website. It is curious that the level of happiness did not fall below 7.5 points, but the Hong Kong metro considers this achievement insufficient. The ambitious plans of the subway management are a solid “ten”.
