The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was the first American all-metal heavy four-engine bomber. The aircraft was designed in 1934 as part of a competition to create a coastal bomber operating against ships. Boeing factories, together with Douglas and Lockheed, produced a total of 6,981 B-17 bombers of various models, as well as 5,745 other modifications, that is, a total of 12,726 units.
