In mid-April 1945, the Soviet Army was faced with the task of capturing Berlin. On April 16, the Berlin operation began. On April 25, Soviet troops surrounded and dismembered the Berlin group of enemy forces into two parts. On April 26, the assault on Berlin began. Fierce fighting continued until May 2. On the night of May 9, Nazi Germany capitulated.
