The first Barbie with a ponytail sold for $3 in 1959 when she debuted at a New York toy show. Her full name, just so you know, is Barbie Millicent Roberts. She is from Willows, Wisconsin. Barbie turns 50 years old. In honor of Barbie's 50th birthday, TODAY's Matt Lauer looks at the doll's impact on American culture.

Yes, there's something wrong with the hat. But who doesn't love a good colorful suit? Miss Barbie was the first doll with flexible legs and eyes that opened and closed. She is also one of the first dolls to be sold with formed hair and various wigs.

This Barbie's hair came in two colors - golden blonde and black - which changed to fiery scarlet and ruby red, respectively. In addition, her packaging turned into a closet. Mattel really thought of everything down to the smallest detail.

It doesn't get more fashionable than this! As the 60s progressed, so did Barbie's style. Even Barbie looks shocked by this turn of events in fashion.

While everyone else turned and screamed, Barbie simply turned around. Along with a new, more youthful face (well done on that one, right?), new eyelashes and shiny hair, Barbie was able to actually rotate at the waist.

Ah, Malibu Barbie. Mattel is sponsoring “The Brady Bunch” to promote this easy, breezy California lifestyle while providing cultural inspiration to this Los Angeles girl's look. This is the first doll to feature an open smile that shows off sparkling white teeth, and Malibu Barbie also came out quite heavily tanned.

So much to do, so little time! Let's get a look. I have to make a phone call, listen to these tapes, watch TV and run errands, and with so little time, all I need is this tiny suitcase.
