BMW has introduced a new generation of the 1 Series hatchback, including a charged version with a 300-horsepower engine. The family retained the same platform, but acquired a modified appearance, a modernized engine range that lost its manual gearbox, and a more digital interior. “Unit” also became the first BMW that does not use the letter i to designate gasoline modifications. Production of the new product will start in October at the plant in Leipzig.
The dimensions of the new BMW 1 Series are 4361x1800x1459 millimeters with a wheelbase of 2670 millimeters, trunk volume is from 300 to 1200 liters. Thus, with the change of generations, the hatch became a little longer and taller, while other parameters did not change. The style of appearance has also been preserved, although the “unit” has been noticeably redesigned in small details. The five-door acquired, for example, a lowered hood line, different bumpers and new lighting equipment. For standard hatches they will offer various body customization packages, for the BMW M135 - an original body kit and “nostrils” with their own filling.
The interior has changed more seriously. In the spirit of all modern new products, the BMW 1 Series was equipped with a large display made up of 10.25 and 10.7-inch diagonal screens, as well as an improved media system with the BMW 9 operating system. This made it possible to significantly reduce the number of physical buttons: control of some functions was transferred to the central display. In addition, the hatch received a redesigned central tunnel with a minimalistic transmission selector and wireless charging. At the same time, the list of available driver assistants has been expanded, adding, for example, an automatic parking attendant and a lane control function.
The interiors will predominantly use fabrics made from recycled plastic and artificial leather. This also applies to the BMW M135, for which, for example, seats with increased lateral support are provided.
The BMW 1 Series will launch with four power units, diesel and petrol, which for the first time in the history of the model will be combined only with a seven-speed Steptronic transmission. The BMW 120 version will receive a 1.5-liter turbo engine in combination with a 48-volt starter-generator producing 170 hp. and 280 Nm and can accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds. The two-liter diesel engine will be offered in two versions, each of which will be slower than the gasoline version. On the BMW 118d the engine will provide 150 hp. and 360 Nm, on a five-door with the index 120d - already 163 hp. and 400 Nm, acceleration to hundreds will take 8.3 and 7.9 seconds.
The flagship BMW M135 is the only one in the family to receive all-wheel drive. Thanks to a 300 hp turbo engine. and 400 Nm, the hot hatch will reach 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h. Thus, with the change of generations, this modification has become even a little weaker and slower than before, but the company will sell this M135 only in Europe. For other markets, engine output is expected to increase to 315 hp. The BMW M135 will by default receive an adaptive suspension with a ground clearance reduced by 8 millimeters and more powerful brakes.
As for chassis improvements, BMW reports, for example, increased body rigidity, different shock absorbers and stabilizers and optimized kinematics. The camber angle of the front wheels has been increased by 20%.
Sales of the new BMW 1 Series in Europe will start this fall. Later, the five-door will appear in other markets, including Japan. The concern is also preparing for the premiere of the new M5. The “court” studio Alpina recently also announced its own new product, but has not yet specified which model we are talking about.
