The Blue Tower on the island where trolls come to life (25 photos + 2 videos)

In 1945, Finnish writer and artist Tove Jansson created a family of trolls with round noses and an endless thirst for adventure.

The world fell madly in love with the Moomins for their comfort, their philosophy, their mom with a handbag and their dad with a top hat. Decades passed. And then one day, the fairy tale decided it was too small to remain on the pages of books.

Kailo Island

In 1993, on the tiny island of Kailo, just a stone's throw from the medieval town of Naantali, a blue house rose from the ground. Five stories high, a red cone-shaped roof, and strange, rounded shapes. Some might call it a quaint mansion. Others would immediately exclaim: it's the Moomin house, straight out of Jansson's drawings.

They say its outline resembles an old tiled stove. Behind such stoves, in the warm darkness, the ancestors of these sweet trolls once hid. The house was painted blueberry blue—the color of Finnish summer nights. Inside, everything is authentic: the staircases, the rooms, the jars of jam in the pantry. You can climb to the very top and look out the window, where no monster awaits you, only the sea, the pine trees, and the silence.

Later, Jansson made another model of the Moominhouse for the Tampere Museum. The author herself held the museum model in her hands and approved it down to the last detail. But for millions of readers, this first model remained the "real" one—the large, clumsy, and incredibly cozy blue house on the island, where you can literally step into a fairy tale.

The Moominhouse still stands on Kylo Island and is the heart of the Moominworld theme park.

The park is open seasonally: from June to August, and also at Christmas. In 2025, the Moomins turned 80 years old. To celebrate the anniversary, the park has added new attractions, including the Grorm's Cave and Hemulen's Lawn.

The house isn't just for viewing from the outside. Guests are allowed inside on all five floors, including Moominmamma's kitchen, Moomintroll's room, and even the attic. Besides the house, scattered around the island are Snufkin's camp, the Witch's hut, and a post office where you can send a postcard with a real Moomin postmark.

A fairy tale that began in 1945 as a newspaper comic strip today greets children and adults at the door of a blue house, inviting them to stay for at least a couple of hours.
